Button batteries and small magnets: why they matter for young children

Last reviewed November 1, 2026

Why these get recalled

Many recalls involve products that contain small button batteries or powerful magnets, such as remote controls, key fobs, toys, greeting cards and light-up items. Swallowed batteries and magnets can cause serious internal injuries.

Check what is in your home

Look at products that use coin-sized batteries and check that the battery compartment closes securely, ideally with a screw. If a compartment does not close, keep the product away from children and look for a recall notice.

Store spare batteries safely

Keep new and used batteries out of reach, in their original packaging or a closed container, and dispose of old ones promptly.

If a child may have swallowed one

Get emergency medical help right away and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Check the recall notices

Search the product at cpsc.gov/Recalls. Notices explain which models are affected and what the company will do.
